Asbestos and asbestos containing materials can be deadly when disturbed and asbestos fibres are released into the air. It only takes one instance of exposure to asbestos for a person to become ill with a life-changing (and often deadly) asbestos-related illness. That is why it is so important to understand whether there is asbestos present when a building is to undergo refurbishment or demolition.

In these cases, there is an almost certainty that any materials containing asbestos will be disturbed, especially when it comes to a demolition project. A demolition project will destroy the structure, bringing it down completely, and that is where any asbestos materials present will be disturbed, releasing dangerous asbestos fibres into the air.

A refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey is fully intrusive in nature, with the entire building (or at least certain areas of the building) completely sealed off and no persons allowed on site other than licensed asbestos survey professionals (such as the Artisan Surveyors team).

The refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey will cover all areas and materials that will be disturbed during the future project, and any suspected materials sampled and tested to allow for a clear and effective plan of action moving forward. It could be that asbestos materials found must be fully removed by licensed asbestos contractors, or they can be left and protected in place in some case (if that area is to be left undisturbed).
